Find the shepherd5/7/2023 ![]() ![]() In the New Testament, Jesus identifies himself as the Good Shepherd and we find in the epistles the notion of good shepherding extended to those who would lead in the church. In the Old Testament God has words of strong rebuke and warning for bad shepherds, and prophecies of a good shepherd that is to come. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father and I lay down my life for the sheep.įor you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. The motif of the shepherd is found throughout the scripture. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. 12 He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 6 And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ 7 Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? 5 And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. “ Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. For it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of me this night. 33 And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. 32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 12 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? 13 And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven. “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so bewise as serpents and innocent as doves. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. I will surely assemble all of you, O Jacob 16 I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, and the fat and the strong I will destroy. 15 I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I myself will make them lie down, declares the Lord God. 14 I will feed them with good pasture, and on the mountain heights of Israel shall be their grazing land. There they shall lie down in good grazing land, and on rich pasture they shall feed on the mountains of Israel. And I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the ravines, and in all the inhabited places of the country. 13 And I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land. ![]() 12 As a shepherd seeks out his flock when he is among his sheep that have been scattered, so will I seek out my sheep, and I will rescue them from all places where they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. “For thus says the Lord God: Behold, I, I myself will search for my sheep and will seek them out. ![]() Their shepherds have led them astray, turning them away on the mountains. “Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!” declares the Lord. They shall come up with acceptance on my altar, The rams of Nebaioth shall minister to you Like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,Īnd like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,Īll the flocks of Kedar shall be gathered to you I have gone astray like a lost sheep seek your servant, We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
